There are many different definitions of "assessment." On the most basic level, "Teachers assess students when they mark them," which provides information that benefits their education in numerous ways. The term "assessment" is also used when teachers discuss the information they offer students to assist them to improve their learning, which is frequently referred to as feedback. When it is referred to as feedback, Teachers can choose to do the feedback immediately on the spot or after the session, or have a regular feedback session for the class. The feedbacks need to be clear and direct, it should aim to improve the students’ (learner) performance. Hence to make the feedback more constructive, we will need the students to act upon it after receiving the feedback, to make sure that the points have been brought across to them.
The other purpose of assessment is to discuss students' capacities for making judgments about their work. This allows students to look beyond the immediate context of this task or unit and develop better judgments about how to recognize excellent work in this field and what the appropriate standards are. Teachers must assist students in developing the capacity to make better judgments about their work in a particular instance of assessment as the curriculum changes over time. For this particular assessment task, teachers need to be very clear about which of those they are doing. Is it primarily about grading for assessment/assignment purposes, is it about giving students useful information, or is it about helping them to build the capacity to make judgments about their workforce? Teachers also need to be very clear about this assessment task's purpose.
I reflected on the question “how do we know that what we set out to teach has been learnt well by our students?”, after reading the article and having chats with my mentors, we can know that what we set out to teach, how well our students learnt and absorbed by various ways to check for their understanding which we will be able to see the evidence of learning through it.
A brief write-up, informal quiz, chat, or survey are examples of diagnostic tests that could be used to see if the students have learned what you set to teach. We could also ask the students after the end of the lesson, to name three things that we learned in class today, for them to reflect on what was taught in the class or even ask them for a quick summary of the things we learnt. They could also pen it down, and write their reflections on a lesson, such as what they learnt, what caused them difficulty, strategies they found helpful, or other lesson-related topics. Students can reflect on and process lessons. By reading student journals, teachers can identify class and individual misconceptions and successes. Individual responses are made by each student to the informal quiz on the knowledge and abilities that were covered in the class. Teachers may decide to let students correct themselves. check for one’s understanding is to have one student try to teach another student what he/she learnt. If she can do that successfully, it is clear he/she understood your lesson. The teacher can also compile assessment data to track each student's development and to guide subsequent lessons. If a student has learnt the desired knowledge and abilities, it can be immediately determined by both the teacher and the student.
This week commemorates Racial Harmony Day, where the school's whole week’s focus was to increase awareness of each others’ culture. Different languages songs were played in the morning and incorporated Singapore traditional games into their PE lessons. Students were also encouraged to wear different ethnic costumes on the day to show appreciation. They also had various ethnic food bazaar for the staff and students to enjoy. I also assisted in the traditional games during PE lessons as well, the students enjoyed themselves during the games. This week’s activities and programmes also revived that “kampong spirit” on this day.
